for Singers & Pianists North American Preliminary Competition

Organized by the Toronto School of Music Canada

Prizes & Awards:  Prizes for the top three finishers in both disciplines.

and a special prize <<Maria Callas>> of Ģit 10.000.000.

All non-winning finalists will receive a lump sum of Ģit 1.000.000.

 

Eligibility: Open to singers aged 35 or born after 5th June 1966.and to pianists aged 32 or born after 5th June 1969.

 

Process: The preliminary competition will be held from May 5 to May 12, 2001 in Toronto, Canada.  The top 10 finishers in the North American preliminary competition will participate in the semifinals in Caltanissetta Italy on June 16-22, 2001.

 

Application: To apply, please send a resume with photo along with a completed application form and a non-refundable application fee of USD 60.00 to the Toronto School of Music Canada.  Candidates residing outside of Canada should send tape of two contrasting pieces that could best highlight their talents.  Successful candidates will be invited to participate in the competition in Toronto in September.

 

Repertoire: Singers: 1. a chamber aria of the 17th or 18th century or a lied, 2. a piece of sacred music, either cantata or oratorio, 3. an opera aria.  Women taking part in the <<Maria Callas>> Award have to present an aria belonging to the 19th century.  The examination board will appreciate particularly an aria by Bellini.

 

Piano: 1. a piece by Chopin (except op.10 no.6, op.25 no.7 and posthumous work), 2. a piece by Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofieff (also the toccata op.11). Bartok (op.18), or Casella (op.70), 3. a sonata by Beethoven (except op.14, 49, 54, 78, 79).
